They’re so used to shifting their appearances in order to appeal to whichever visitor or other worldly being they encounter!Īll in all, I just don’t really like the canon designs and I don’t feel it suits them as well as they could have. I’ve always written it as Balan being very against anyone seeing his maskless face, so it would work if he has a lot of different forms he can take! Maybe Balan and Lance don’t have a set true form, or they’ve changed themselves so much over the years they don’t even remember what their real forms look like anymore. I think I’ll keep the hatless look I was working with as the main form he presents as in my AU.
Same with Lance, they just feel very gentle and kind, completely unlike the angular, aggressive form throughout the game. I do like this idea, and it makes his ending form seem very genuine, even very sweet. He’s lost that big, goofy grin, but what if the grin was just a facade? He is obviously a grand actor after all, and he has to put up an air of positivity at all times.
He is plain, but he’s also being genuine and honest, maybe for the first time in a long while. On the other hand, a few people have told me about how Balan’s true form being so muted is actually kind of cool, because it’s as if he’s dropped his entire persona and is just… Balan, at his true core now. He became kind of generic, and while that’s not a bad thing, it just kind of left me a bit disappointed. Every striking feature about Balan wasn’t translated into his hatless form, even his silly lil locs. He feels so muted and plain, same with Lance visually.
The main reason I dislike Balan’s true form is because it just… Doesn’t feel like Balan to me. It makes me think all the appearances they take are simply different forms, and there are many, many more they can chose from!ĭon’t get me wrong, I don’t hate their canon forms! I found them pretty jarring at first, especially Balan’s, but they’re growing on me. We see him consume liquids and cry, which takes physical organs to actually do so. Because Lance also turned into a crazy, nightmarish monster form, and Balan’s hatted form is obviously capable of a lot of things a regular costume wouldn’t be able to do. How I think I’ll spin it is that the designs we see at the end of the game were forms they took in order to best appeal to Emma and Leo, because they wanted to appear more humanoid and softer/more approachable to the kids. I’m not sure if their ending looks will be canon in my AU.
